Sweeps Corner - September 2025

It seems there has not been a newsletter since February this year – how time flies when training hard for States and Nationals! Well done to all those who attended and congratulations to all teams. It was an exciting course at Penrith with new boats and oars to contend with, a challenge without having a training day to become accustomed to the equipment.

SWEEP TRAINING IN CLUBS

After Nationals, clubs usually have some down time if there is no IDBF Club Crew training. Dragon Boat ‘off season’ is usually through the winter months which is an ideal time for extra sweep training, new sweeps to have a try and upskilling of existing sweep expertise. We would encourage clubs and coaches to put aside some time for this in preparation for the racing season.

SWEEP WORKSHOPS 2025 

First workshop of the year was held at the Gold Coast Dragon Boat club on 17th August and was attended by 11 Level 1’s and 6 L2 & L3, thanks to Gold Coast club at Varsity Lakes for facilitating this. Trainers assisting - Heather Day, Kerry Seymour, Geoff Holdsworth

 

The second Sweeps workshop was recently held at Maroochy Sea Serpents, Maroochydore on 21st September, attended by 10 L1’s and 5 L2 & L3, thanks to MSS for facilitating this.Trainers assisting for the day - Heather Day, Kerry Seymour, Jenny Shapland.

Sweep Workshops are not possible without volunteer paddlers, thank you to all who attended these courses.

RESOURCES AND GUIDELINES

We have been working on several documents and guidelines over the last year for sweeps/steerers and have recently submitted these to DBQ to be hosted on the DBQ website under sweep resources. You wil find the following:
